Do Essential Oils Contain Hormones?

Regarding hormones, oils do not contain any hormones manufactured or needed by human bodies, but the molecules of essential oils can act like hormones in that they can occupy hormonal receptor sites and, thus, trigger beneficial hormonal actions in support of our endocrine system. Also, as in the case of proteins, enzymes, and vitamins, essential oils can stimulate and support our bodies in producing the actual hormones we need. Since hormones are small molecules that can come through the distillation process, it is possible that essential oils do contain traces of plant hormones which can be beneficial to our well being.
Since the presence of hormones in essential oils would only be in very tiny amounts, not detected by a chemical analysis from a laboratory, the "hormonal" properties of oils would be more in the way of support and enhancement of our endocrine systems, assisting in the manufacture and balance of the hormones our body naturally makes. So there you have it. ~David Stuart, Ph.D

Essentials For Women's Health

Recently featured in Essential Lifestyle magazine, Dr. Dan Purser has an extensive resume that includes practices in family medicine with an emphasis on women’s health and preventative care of the body.
Menopause
As women mature, the most pressing health concern is menopause. Menopause is inevitable, it is unavoidable, and it can be extremely difficult. There are 35 known health effects associated with menopause including:

Hot flashes
Night sweats
Fatigue
Insomnia
Increased wrinkles
Weight gain and muscle loss (sarcopenia)
Memory issues

Thankfully, progesterone—a naturally-occurring human hormone—can combat or decrease many of these negative effects. Progesterone is known to decrease foam cell formation[1], endothelial inflammation, and plaque formation—thus promoting a healthy cardiovascular system. Unfortunately, as the body ages levels of progesterone decrease. In order to stay healthy, it is recommended that most women supplement their progesterone levels.

Natural Solution:
Dr. Purser’s go-to supplement for relieving the discomfort associated with menopause is Progessence™. “In my own office practice,” Dr. Purser attests, “Liberal use of Progessence dramatically decreased hot flashes and day and night sweats.”
Progessence™ is comprised of a variety of ingredients specially combined for women’s health. Progesterone, as mentioned above, is known to mitigate many of the health effects associated with menopause; pure geranium, fennel, and sage essential oils improve estrogen receptor function; and black and blue cohosh and wild yam help support proper levels of progesterone for women.

Osteoporosis
Menopause also increases the likelihood of developing osteoporosis—a disease that decreases bone density thereby increasing the chance of fracture. To combat osteoporosis, it’s a good idea to take a supplement that contains both calcium and magnesium[2] and selenium—an antioxidant associated with reduced risk of osteoporotic hip fracture in elderly subjects.[3]
Natural Solution:
Super Cal™, a supplement that combines calcium and magnesium with selenium, is Dr. Purser’s first choice to help maintain proper bone health. Super Cal takes the expertly formulated amounts of calcium, magnesium, and selenium and infuses it with pure marjoram, wintergreen, lemongrass, and myrtle essential oils to enhance the synergistic effects of this specially blended supplement.

You've Lost That Loving Feeling?

According to Elizabeth Scott, M.S., stress in your life can lead to low libido. You may have already instinctively felt this, but studies prove that general stressors in your life can impact your sex drive. That means job stress, financial stress, the stress of being too busy, and especially relationship stress can negatively impact your libido, possibly causing stress in yet another area of your life.

Stress can affect your libido for several reasons.

Stress Response Affects Hormones

When you react to stress, your body goes through a series of changes in order to prepare you to run away or stay and fight, called your fight or flight response. Part of this response is the release of hormones such as cortisol and epinephrine (or adrenaline). If your stress response isn’t reversed, it can contribute to a condition known as chronic stress, and can also interfere with the hormones involved in your sexual response. The result can be low libido.
Busy Lifestyles Drain Sexual Energy

Many of us find ourselves busier than we ever thought possible. Especially for women, juggling multiple responsibilities of parenting, jobs, and keeping the household afloat can lead to an absolutely packed schedule. How can lead to low libido? Being constantly busy means having little down time, which can be an energy drain and a drain on your sex drive. A busy schedule can mean a busy mind — and having a lot on your mind can make it difficult to relax and "get in the mood," especially for women. A busy schedule can even present difficulties in finding the time for sex, or make it feel like just one more thing on your mile-long "to-do list." All of these factors can contribute to a lower libido.
Relationship Stress Can Hinder Intimacy

Relationship issues are perhaps the biggest issue to look at when dealing with low libido. Studies show that relationship stress— stress due to conflict within the relationship and other factors inside the relationship can be a stronger factor in low libido than other types of stress. This is true for both men and women. And because men and women both say that their partner’s satisfaction impacts their own libido, a lack of interest in one partner can mean a lack of interest for both partners. Low libido itself can be part of a conflicted dynamic that can lead to -- you guessed it -- more problems with low libido!

Studies also show that "positive touch" by a partner can have a soothing effect on women and help a woman feel more resilient toward stress, so losing this stress buffer can be another turn in a downward spiral of stress and low libido. Because relationship conflict can cause stress, lead to more circumstances that cause stress, and deprive you of stress-buffering effects as well, relationship difficulties are important to work through for the sake of your sex life.

Aromatherapy, especially when applied with massage, is a great way to promote mutual relaxation and kindle romance by calming the stress response!

How do essential oils affect the body's stress alarm system? Research* has led scientists to the conclusion that one of the reasons essential oils work as "balancers" in a person's nervous system is that they contain a complex assortment of biochemicals, some of which are stimulating and some of which are sedating. It appears that the actions of these multiple chemicals present in aromatic plant oils are synergistic and complementary, stimulating certain parts of the brain and sedating other parts at the same time, creating an overall beneficial, balancing effect. Curiously, the oils seem to "know" chemically which action is most needed! In aromatherapy, these oils are referred to as "adaptogens" because they can create different influences, depending on what the person needs for balance.

Essential Tip of the Week-Headaches

Headaches can be due to hormone imbalances, shortage of oxygen, sinus pressure, stress, muscle tension/injury, sugar imbalance (hypoglycemia) or colon/liver congestion. Other triggers for migraines can be monosodium glutamate and other food preservatives, synthetic fragrances, and environmental allergic reactions.

Essential oils boost the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood and oxygen infusion into the cell. They can also soothe inflammation which can reduce pain.

Here are some EO's that work well for specific headache types. I like to mix a drop or two of a single EO or blend with a few drops of pure jojoba oil in my hand and apply to neck and shoulders. Holding firm pressure under the protruding bones at the base of your head (brain stem) with thumb or fingertips can bring great relief as well.

Hormone Imbalances: Lavender, Clary Sage, Ylang Ylang, Geranium, Fennel, Bergamot, Dragon Time Blend.

Hypoglycemic Migraine: Peppermint, Lavender, Dill, Di-Gize Blend

Migraine: Helichrysum, Frankincense, Lavender, Basil, Rosemary, Peppermint (great for migraines with nausea), Eucalyptus radiata.

The vast majority of migraine headaches may be due to colon congestion or poor digestion. I use Young Living's Cleansing Trio for an annual or bi-annual cleanse.

Note: Lavender and Basil, layered (not mixed together) on the forehead and temples, have relieved migraines.

Muscle-Related Headache: Lavender, Marjoram, Peppermint, Lemongrass, Frankincense (my personal favorite).

Sinus-Related Headache: Lavender, Eucalyptus radiata, RC Blend, Raven Blend (the BEST!).

Structural-Bone-Related Headache: Lavender with Wintergreen, Basil, Lemongrass, PanAway Blend.

Please keep in mind that the oils that can produce these benefits MUST be pure, therapeutic/medicinal grade. I use Young Living's EOs because of their exceptional purity, potency, consistant quality and excellent results. All the EO blends listed in this post are either trademarked or formulated by Young Living.

Essential oils-through their fragrance and unique molecular structure-can directly stimulate the limic lobe and the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is one of the most important parts of the brain, acting as our hormonal control center. It releases chemical messengers that effect everything from sex drives to energy levels.

The hypothalamus is referred to as the master gland because it governs the production of:

Growth Hormones ( for youth and longevity)
Sex Hormones (menstrual cycles, sex drive, conception)
Thyroid Hormones (controls energy)
Neurotransmitters (like seratonin)

Essential oils can exert a profound effect on the body and mind by way of the hypothalamus. Not only can inhalation of essential oils be used to combat stress and emotional trauma, but they can stimulate the production of hormones from the hypothalamus.

Some essential oils that are especially stimulating to the hypothalamus and endocrine system:

Frankincense
Myrrh
Peppermint
Bergamot
Spearmint
Spruce
Pepper
Helichrysum
EndoFlex Blend
En-R-Gee Blend
Brain Power Blend
Hope Blend
3 Wise Men Blend

There can be many different factors contributing to infertility. To bring our bodies into balance, instead of masking symptoms and forcing conception, here are some core issues to examine.

Stress levels and emotional trauma (past and present)

Relationship with your spouse

Vitamin B6 and B12 deficiencies

Calcium/Magnesium deficiency(ALWAYS choose calcium citrate for best absorption)

Mineral deficiency

Colon/Liver function

Yeast/Fungus overgrowth

I know my readers will have many questions about the applications of the essential oils, so feel free to comment with your questions or send me an email for a free personal consultation. Oh, and remember to get your copy of the Essential Oils Desk Reference!

A Fragrant Deception:Perfume and Infertility Part 1

An attractive young man exchanges lusty glances with a scantily clad, heavily airbrushed supermodel as a breath of wind seductively tousles her hair.....what fragrance ad is it for this time? Allure? Sexy? Irresistible? Illusion? One was accurately named....Poison!

Let's take a closer look at the fragrances that ingenious marketing promises will turn the average female or male into ravishing sex magnets.

Many of the ingredients mimic estrogen which in high levels have been known to cause cancer. Instead of worrying about how large her breasts can look, a woman who indulges in synthetic fragrances should be concerned about just keeping her breasts. But then, another advertising scheme selling a PINK fragrance may appear, with all proceeds going to breast cancer awareness of course!

The big sell is attracting the opposite sex. What does that usually lead to? Babies, eventually. For millions of couples around the world that is occurring naturally less and less. As you will read below the fragrance extenders called phthalates can damage the DNA of sperm in adult males and cause genital abnormalities in male babies. And that cologne will bring out the "real man" in you?Generations to come will be affected by the deception of synthetic fragrances.

" The European Commission is proposing a ban on the use in cosmetics of two of the most potent forms of phthalates amid fears they cause genital abnormalities affecting up to 4 per cent of male babies. These genital abnormalities - which can include undescended testicles and malformation of the urinary tract - are blamed for soaring levels oftesticular cancer in young men. Cases of the disease have risen tenfold in the past century. About 1900 British males, some as young as 15, are diagnosed every year. Nine out of 10 cases are cured, but doctors are worried by the trend. Scientists believe the phthalates could be absorbed into women's bloodstreams through the skin or inhalation." (The Australian 2002)

Fragrance on a label can indicate the presence of up to 4,000 separate ingredients. There is no way to know what the chemicals are, since on the label it will simply read "fragrance." Some problems caused by these chemicals include headaches, dizziness, rash, hyper pigmentation, violent coughing, vomiting, skin irritation—the list goes on. They can also trigger asthma.

Pthalates are used to keep fragrance chemicals in solution. They are found in almost all fragrances and manufacturers are allowed to list them under the name fragrance or parfum. Phthalates are used to enhance fragrances, as solvents, and to denature alcohol.
These chemicals have been shown to enter the bloodstream and concentrate in fat cells. They are extremely potent estrogen mimics and some are 10 000 times more potent than estrogen itself. High levels of estrogen have been known to cause cancer.

DEP is the phthalate found in the highest levels in humans and a study published in Environmental Health Perspectives (December 2002) found that DEP is damaging to the DNA of sperm in adult men at current levels of exposure. DNA damage to sperm can lead to infertility and may also be linked to miscarriages, birth defects, infertility and cancer in offspring. Recent product tests found the chemical in every fragrance tested in the United States.

Why choose a fake, potentially fatal fragrance when pure essential oils are so beautifully balancing and life-promoting? Read more in Part 2!
