Essential Oil Remedies for Seasonal Allergies

Spring has arrived and so has the onset of seasonal allergies. Approximately 20% of the U.S. population suffers from allergic diseases, with the most common seasonal allergy being allergic rhinitis. Early spring triggers tree pollen season followed by grasses in late spring and early summer as well as weaker pollens in late summer. Allergic intolerance can trigger your respiration, swelling, itching, digestive tract, sneezing and congestion.

Listed below are my preferred choices of Young Living Essential Oils used during allergy season.

Runny Nose - Melaleuca Alternafolia, Lavender, Harmony.
Application: Rub oils on sternum and inhale.

Sinus Pressure - Eucalyptus Blue, Rosemary or Breath Again.
Application: Rub oils on either side of the nose or tent head over pot of hot water with a few drops of oil.

Rash - Peppermint, Melrose or Thieves Toothpaste.
Application : Dilute with V6 and rub on rash. (Toothpaste works great on Poison Ivy.)

Headache - Peppermint or Deep Relief Application: Apply to temples, back of the neck and forehead.

Sore Throat - Thieves Lozenges (Hard or Soft), Lemon or Wintergreen. Application: Gargle with Thieves mouthwash. Apply oils to neck.

Spring Cleaning Naturally with Essential Oils

Cleaning with Essential Oils

It can be daunting to live a healthier lifestyle, and one of the last areas you may think to change is your cleaning products. Most modern cleaning products require certain chemicals and surfactants (or cleansing agents) to make them work, and you should know what they are and their potential affects. It’s also important to find ways to limit your exposure to these toxins, and learn about safe, effective alternatives.

Here’s a quick run-down of some common cleaning chemicals, along with some of the many places you may see them:
  • DEA (Diethanolamine)—Found in more than 600 home and personal care products, such as shampoos, conditioners, bubble baths, lotions, cosmetics, soaps, laundry and dishwashing detergents. Suspected of carcinogenic activity (causing or contributing to cancer) or of being potentially dangerous or hazardous to health.
  • Propylene Glycol—The main ingredient found in anti-freeze; also common in shampoos, deodorants, cosmetics, lotions, toothpastes, processed foods, baby wipes, and many more personal care items. Implicated in contact dermatitis, kidney damage, and liver abnormalities; can inhibit skin cell growth in human tests and can damage cell membranes causing rashes, dry skin, and surface damage.
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)—Industrial uses include concrete floor cleaners, engine degreasers, and car wash detergents. Also found in shampoos, liquid soaps, conditioners, cleansers, toothpaste, and children’s personal care products. SLS is found in nearly all toothpastes, and is absorbed through skin contact and retained for up to five days.
  • Talc—Chemically similar to asbestos, talc has been inked to ovarian cancer. It’s found in many body and baby powders, as well as many cosmetics.
  • Alcohol—Most mouthwash products have a higher alcohol content than most alcoholic beverages (beer, wine, etc). Mouthwash products with alcoholic content greater than 25 percent have been linked to cancers of the mouth, tongue, and throat. Alcohol acts as a solvent inside the mouth, making tissues more vulnerable to carcinogens.

Essential Oil Cleaning Solutions
It may not be possible or cost effective to avoid all of these chemicals in your cleaning and personal care products, but there are plenty of ways to reduce your family’s exposure to them. Using therapeutic-grade essential oils, as a natural household cleaner, is a safe, effective alternative to many store-bought cleaning products. Some of the best essential oils for cleaning include cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, thyme, spruce, lemon, lemongrass, and grapefruit. Try some of the following ideas for a powerful, natural clean:

Household cleaner:

  • Fill a spray bottle with water and a squirt of dishwashing soap.
  • Add 3–5 drops each of lavender, lemon, and pine essential oils.
  • Shake well.

Floor cleaner:

  • Add 1/4 cup white vinegar to a bucket of water.
  • Add 5–10 drops lemon, pine, spruce, melaleuca, or Purification essential oil.

Fighting dust mites:

  • Recent research has shown that eucalyptus essential oil kills dust mites that live in bedding.
  • Add 25 drops of eucalyptus essential oil to each load of laundry for an effective dust mite deterrent.

Hot tubs and saunas:

  • Use 3 drops per person of lavender, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, thyme, lemon, or grapefruit to disinfect and freshen the water.
  • For saunas, add several drops rosemary, thyme, pine, or lavender to a spray bottle with water and spray surfaces. This water can also be used to splash onto hot sauna stones.

Kitchens and bathrooms:

  • Mix into 1 quart water: 2 drops rosemary, 4 drops lemon, 3 drops eucalyptus, and 4 drops lavender.
  • Shake well and put into a spray bottle. Shake again before using.

Window cleaner:

  • Mix in 1 quart spray bottle: 1 cup White Vinegar, 10-15 drops of Lemon Essential Oil, water.
  • Mix vinegar and water in spray bottle.
  • Add essential oil.
  • Shake and use.

Stain Removal:

  • Use a drop or two of lemon essential oil on stains.
  • Let stand and rub off with a clean cloth or throw into laundry cycle.

In the Dryer:

  • Instead of using toxic and irritating softening sheets in the dryer, toss in a dampened washcloth with 10 drops of lavender, lemon, melaleuca, bergamot, or other oils added.
  • While the oils will not reduce static cling, they will impart a lovely fragrance to the clothes.

2012 In The Rearview Mirror

Hello friends! Just like life after 2012, this blog goes on.... I miss writing, and while I have somewhat abandoned my posts (pun intended), Oils For Wellness has enjoyed an abundant year with exciting new changes. Here are some highlights:

  • Natural MEDS Workshops are now being held every 3rd Saturday of the month with growing attendance. A different topic each month and quarterly free introductory class on essential oils.
  • My Young Living Essential Oils team experienced the highest sales volume EVER in 12 years and more than doubled our organization volume in 2012 plus a record number of personally enrolled distributors.
  • I have added Wildtree Herbs infused oils, spices, marinades, and natural meal solutions to my product line! Wildtree products are available on my website and I also will be stocking inventory as well.
  • The Facebook silent auction in August raised almost $1,000 for clean water projects in Africa. Many area businesses donated generously to sponsor my half marathon trail run in September with Team World Vision.
  • Oils For Wellness now has an actual HQ, Suite 10, adjacent to my massage studio where clients can relax, pray, read, journal and sample/shop wellness products.
  • The Holiday Open House on December 15th was a great success. Clients and friends enjoyed delicious food by Wildtree, got a special deal on massage, and contributed to Hurricane Sandy Relief by purchasing shots at the Ningxia Red juice "bar".
Have a blessed and healthy 2013!

Fibromyalgia and Pituitary Damage

Dan Purser, MD talks about the connection between pituitary damage and fibromyalgia in his book Top 7 Female Health Concerns. "From our research we believe that fibromyalgia is almost always caused by pituitary damage. The location in the bony vault (called the sella turcica) makes the pituitary very vulnerable. This positioning is why it can be damaged in car wrecks and from a sudden blow to the head and from whiplash injuries. The pituitary is very fragile and the stalk damage is most common. Anyone with fibromyalgia knows what fibro fog is-it's where they get confused and have brain fog--it's terrible. Well, partially this is from lack of pregnenalone which women make in their ovaries and men make in their testicles-under the control of the pituitary. This is where it breaks down-these patients have a damaged pituitary and cannot make pregnenalone."
Dr.Purser recommends endocrine supporting supplements to help replace thyroid, pituitary, and adrenal hormones like Young Living's Thyromin and PD 80/20. Follow the links to learn more about these products. Selenium, one of the ingredients in Thyromin helps thyroid receptors work better.

I highly recommend craniosacral therapy to help ease stress on the pituitary gland from the structural standpoint. Oils best to soothe fibromyalgia externally:
Frankincense
Wintergreen
Copiaba
German Chamomile
Nutmeg
Idaho Balsam fir

Blends: PanAway, Relieve It, OrthoSport, Deep Relief Roll On, Stress Away Roll On

Diffusing an essential oil may help ease brain fog.
Mix 2-5 drops of the essential oil of your choice with 2-5 drops of carrier oil (jojoba, grapeseed, almond) and apply to specific locations of discomfort. A full body massage or Raindrop Technique weekly is very beneficial.
To order Young Living products mentioned call Jennifer Nordin at 651-503-9402 or use ID 329194 at youngliving.com. Order $30 or more and I will send you a copy of Dr. Purser's book free of charge!

The Aromatic Triad or.... HOW Essential Oils Work!

In his book, Natural Home Health Care Using Essential Oils, Daniel Penoel, MD refers to the “Aromatic Triad” of matter, energy and information embodied in the oils. As powerful healing allies, the oils can provide help at many different levels, known and unknown, throughout the body’s total healing system. Essential oils are adaptogens. This means they have the ability to provide therapy in unanticipated or unexpected ways; they seem to understand – and the body understands – instinctively where their influence is needed and how it is best used.
Dr. Penoel considers eight realms in which the healing effects of essential oils can have an influence. I’ve listed them here with brief descriptions for reference:
  • The Congenital Realm – refers to issues of heredity or as a result of complications during pregnancy. What Penoel refers to as “aromatic treatment” focuses here on alleviating the consequences of damaged DNA replication or from events occurring during conception or fetus development.
  • The Organic Realm – refers to the organic systems of the body including the liver, kidneys, lungs, spleen, cardiovascular system, digestive system, etc. Aromatic molecules provide properties that promote improved functioning of the organs.
  • The Bioelectronic Realm – refers to the biochemical and the electromagnetic systems of the body. Essential oils have an uncanny capacity to balance the pH, increase the electrical resistance, and reduce the oxidation within body fluids. Added to this biochemical action is their electromagnetic action - which can create an inhospitable environment for pathogens.
  • The Microbial Realm - This refers to the flora and fauna co-existing within our bodies including pathogens as well as the friendly allies. Within the digestive tract alone, we harbor more bacteria than there are cells in our body. Certain essential oils have the ability to eliminate the unwanted inhabitants while preserving those that are helpful.
  • The Immunity Realm - refers to the immune functions of the body. Effects of essential oils treatment are known to stimulate, regulate, or modulate immune system response.
  • The Structural Realm – refers to bone, joint, and muscle systems of the body, especially the spine. Aromatherapy can play a support role to corrective, energy, or structure techniques that is extremely valuable.
  • The Glandular Realm - refers to the system of glands in the body which produce a vast and interrelated group of hormones to regulate most body functions and many psychological mechanisms. Like essential oil molecules, these hormones are highly complex and have a tremendous influence on the growth, healing, health, and regulation of body systems. Either by direct action or by more subtle biochemical processes (molecules which are precursors to hormone structures), essential oils can be used here also to stimulate, moderate, or regulate glandular performance.
  • The Neuro-Psychic Realm - refers to the functions related directly to and controlled by the brain - or “human central computer.” This includes pain response, controlling the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, production of endorphins, the functions of the subconscious and the memory, and the libido, among others. The effects of essential oils can stimulate, moderate, or regulate these functions with this realm providing one of the highest response levels to aromatic molecules.
What we observe and experience as the healing effects of essential oils are a result of the aromatic triad (matter, energy and information) interacting within these eight realms.

The Mystery of the Power of Faith To Heal The Sick

The Big Stick Called Faith
By Jim Lynn for God's Healing Word (posted on OFW with permission)
A great mystery
I want to tell you about a great mystery that has perplexed
Christians of our generation. This mystery stirs fear and
creates unrest within the Church. What mystery do I speak
of? It is the mystery of the power of faith to heal the sick.
The mystery of the power of faith to heal the sick is not
ours alone. For despite the power and authority given to
the twelve disciples to drive out demons and heal the sick,
they, too, struggled to administer that power and authority.
In other words, twelve handpicked men of Christ struggled
with the issue of faith to heal the sick just as we do today!
Let's review some known facts:
We know Jesus sent His disciples out, two by two, to preach
the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. But before doing so,
He gave them each a huge stick to carry. That huge stick is
God's authority and power (Matthew 10:1).
Armed with this big stick, the disciples were able to drive
out demons and heal the sick of every known disease.
Without the stick, these ordinary men were powerless.
But as we shall soon learn, just because these twelve were
given God's power and authority to heal didn't mean they
would always be successful. That's because Jesus required
the twelve to possess one thing more, which only they
themselves could supply.
That one thing was their faith!
In spite of having God's power and authority to heal the sick,
the disciples were powerless without their personal belief
and faith that God would do as they asked of Him.
Mark 6:13 tells us when the disciples went out, they drove
out many demons and healed the sick (Mark 6:13). Praise
God! Imagine their joy and the great enthusiasm which
followed. They must have had many wonderful stories
to tell as a result.
But wait:
On at least on one occasion, things didn't go so well.
Not everyone was healed. The disciples had tried
unsuccessfully to drive a lunatic demon from a boy
(Matthew 17:16).
When the boy's father related this information to Jesus,
He replied, "O faithless and perverse generation...How
long shall I put up with you?" (Matthew 17:17) Obviously,
Jesus' statement was not directly pointed toward the
disciples, although it most certainly included them.
When the disciples later came to Jesus in private to ask
Him why they couldn't heal the boy, He answered them
by saying, "because you have so little faith"
(Matthew 17:19-20).
That's the mystery, the great mystery called faith, which
the world fears yet today and has created division and
strife within the Church.
Faith is the keystone that empowers God's authority and
power to heal the sick. How much faith? Jesus said with
just a little faith nothing will be impossible for you
(Matthew 17:20-21).
Many years later, the Apostle James would admonish
Church elders to pray over their sick in faith, and to anoint
the sick with oil for healing (James 5:14-16). James had
obviously learned the lesson of faith well from his own
failure while in training with Jesus years before. For he
was with Jesus the day the father of the lunatic boy
approached Jesus.
Faith in God's promise to heal is what separates men
of faith in God, from carnal men who cower in fear or
disbelief. This kind of faith is not intellectual or born of
doctrine. It is a soul searching conviction (born of God's
Word) which touches the very heart of God.
Church elders today, who dismiss James 5:14ff, of course
do not practice James' admonition. To make themselves
feel comfortable about their dismissal (and to be accepted
by the world) they have Church doctrines which effectively
puts God out of the healing business, and healing out of the
Body of Christ (The Church).
The real question we should be asking ourselves is not
whether God heals. The real question should be are we
willing to believe and put our faith in God's promise to
exercise His power and authority on our behalf?
That's a big question because faith to heal places God
squarely into our midst, not far off in some unseen world.
It puts Him right into our lives and world, much like our
mother, father and children are part of our lives.
I have to tell you, many Christians are not comfortable with
that thought. They fear God. They are more comfortable
with a God that is somewhere over there, not here.
You see, faith for many Christians consists of believing in
Jesus Christ as their Savior. That's good, but think about it.
Faith to save one's soul is a far cry from faith that falls
upon Jesus Christ for healing.
The former is benign and requires little beyond intellectual
acceptance, kinda like acceptance that the earth spins one
revolution every 24 hours on its axis. People accept the
earth spins and go on with their lives. No biggy. We regulate
our lives by this spinning, and that's about it.
Likewise, many people willingly conform their lives as
Christians to live a moral existence with a hope for the
resurrection. They count themselves faithful if they attend
Church regularly. That's the extent of faith for many Christians.
Unless they are forced to renounce their faith or be killed,
there is little to challenge their faith.
The latter, however, goes much farther. It actively calls
Upon God's power and authority with unwavering certainty
to restore the human body to wholeness free of disease.
That's not something the world likes or accepts.
The implications of this kind of faith goes far beyond intellectual
faith and being faithful to attend Church. This kind of faith stands
squarely against the world and medical tests that says a person
has cancer and has two months to live. It defies Church doctrine
which does not believe in divine healing. It falls with conviction
and certainty upon an unseen all powerful God that He will
fulfill His Word to us. That, friends, is the kind of faith Jesus
had in mind when he lamented, "O faithless and perverse
generation."
One of America's Presidents, Teddy Roosevelt, had a saying
about America's role in the world. He said America should
walk softly and carry a big stick. Of course, that big stick
was America's military might.
As Christians, we are to walk softly and also carry a big stick,
The big stick of faith that believes God's Word. That many
Christians have entrusted the world to the care of their
bodies at the expense of forsaking God's power and authority
to heal speaks volumes about the size of the stick they carry.
May the God of Peace fill your heart
and soul with faith.

Do Essential Oils Contain Hormones?

Regarding hormones, oils do not contain any hormones manufactured or needed by human bodies, but the molecules of essential oils can act like hormones in that they can occupy hormonal receptor sites and, thus, trigger beneficial hormonal actions in support of our endocrine system. Also, as in the case of proteins, enzymes, and vitamins, essential oils can stimulate and support our bodies in producing the actual hormones we need. Since hormones are small molecules that can come through the distillation process, it is possible that essential oils do contain traces of plant hormones which can be beneficial to our well being.
Since the presence of hormones in essential oils would only be in very tiny amounts, not detected by a chemical analysis from a laboratory, the "hormonal" properties of oils would be more in the way of support and enhancement of our endocrine systems, assisting in the manufacture and balance of the hormones our body naturally makes. So there you have it. ~David Stuart, Ph.D

OilTalk Tip of the Week: Healing Burns

"My daughter was using a gas grill and when she discovered it had gone out, she bent down to re-light it. A huge fire ball shot out right in her face. Her entire face was burned and she was in a lot of pain. We spritzed Young Living Essential Oils Lavaderm (a aloe/lavender spray) every few minutes for the first few hours--then hourly during the night and the next few days. When the Lavaderm was gone, we continued with Lavender oil because now we were able to touch her face without much pain. She never got a single blister and has healed wonderfully."

Rawsome: A New Food Attitude

healthy eating Pictures, Images and Photos

My husband and I have had a pretty healthy diet during our 7 years of marriage, but this year we are aiming for a diet that is focused around 75% raw foods. Check out these seven benefits of going raw. Some friends of ours have gone mostly raw for health reasons and we are inspired to do the same. Summer is a great time to get started because of the plentiful selection of fresh local produce and the hot days ahead will make cold foods seem most appealing. I am excited to try new salad creations and learn how to make raw desserts that eliminate flour, sugar, and dairy.

April is National Stress Awareness Month

April is National Stress Awareness Month, and research has linked chronic stress with life-threatening illnesses such as heart attacks, stroke, depression, and chronic pain. For many of us, stress and the anxiety it causes are an unavoidable part of our daily lives. A low level of stress is indeed often necessary to motivate us, but it is important to keep its impact within a level you can tolerate. If allowed to dominate, stress can cause intense anxiety and a general deterioration in health. It can also increase the risk of more serious ailments developing, such as stomach ulcers. Inhaling certain aromas help to reduce stress by promoting relaxation.

Not all scents are created equal however. Synthetic fragrances found in most commercial perfumes, body care, and candles are petroleum based and can cause allergic reactions, one of which is irritability, headaches, and brain fog. Pure, natural plant oils such as Young Living Essential Oils contain carefully preserved therapeutic molecules without any fillers, pesticide residues, or synthetic ingredients.

Lavender is universally most well known for its relaxing properties. For relief from sudden stress, sprinkle 4 drops of Lavender on a tissue and inhale deeply. Other single oils that soothe stress are Roman Chamomile, Sandalwood, Idaho Balsam Fir, Clary Sage, Cedarwood, and Geranium. Any of these oils are wonderful in a cold air ultrasonic diffuser, which is the best method for dispersing a microfine mist into the air.A few drops may be added to a bath with sea salts and baking soda or in a little jojoba oil for a shoulder massage. An excellent remedy for stress is to simply ask someone who cares for you to hold you close!

My favorite blended oils are Young Living's Tranquil and Stress Away which are packaged in no fuss, easy to use, and portable roll on applicators. These are a must have for on-the-go stress relief! Valor and Peace and Calming blends are very popular choices among my massage clients.

"Great opportunities to help others seldom come,

but small ones surround us daily."
